Haugh Of Urr Rationale

Our vision is for Haugh of Urr Nursery to be recognised as an Early Learning and Childcare setting which delivers high quality learning experiences and care to all our children whilst engaging with our families and local community at every opportunity.

Nursery Community and Learning Environment
Haugh of Urr Nursery is a small, rural, committee-run nursery delivering pre-school education and care to children between 2yrs 9 months and 5yrs, with a service also available to eligible 2yr olds. We serve the immediate community of the Haugh of Urr, from the Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie area, and much further afield. We are very well supported by our neighbouring school and local community in all that we do.

Many families choose to travel significant distances to come to us, enjoying the benefits of our new well appointed and modern nursery, surrounded by countryside, with lots of opportunities for outdoor learning.  We are very well supported by our neighbouring school and local community in all that we do.

Our nursery is spacious, well equipped, bright and welcoming, with our super outdoor Forest Classroom, providing all aspects of learning, allowing friendships to blossom and encourages children to play together with the security of adult figures nearby.

Our service delivery model is currently 1140 hours of pre-school funded sessions over a 38 week period, with each session being 3hrs in length. We offer 10 sessions in a week, with a morning and afternoon session every day.

At Haugh of Urr Nursery we follow the 3-18 Curriculum for Excellence and Realising the Ambition guidance materials. The Early years level focuses on children’s skills development from 3 years of age until the end of P1 and covers 8 subject areas – Numeracy, Literacy and English, Expressive Arts, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Science, Technology and Health and Wellbeing. Our room layout and resources address all of these curricular areas. There is a big focus on the Health and  Wellbeing indicators- Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Responsible, Respected and Included. We always strive to fulfil the ‘4 capacities’ of Curriculum for Excellence, providing experiences which will create ‘responsible citizens, confident individuals, successful learners and effective contributors’.

We follow a ‘Planning in the Moment’ approach and the planning is child led whenever possible. The children’s ideas shape the activities, the level of learning and the resources we use. We respond to their ideas and interests as they occur in order to engage the children and motivate them to focus and learn. This way of working is extremely successful and develops the children’s knowledge and experiences in unexpected ways. We consider the children’s stage of development and are flexible in our approach to working with them to help them learn new skills and challenge their
thinking and learning.
